we were in plank position, then pivoted onto our right side, so the left arm and outside of the left foot are holding us up. the right arm is pointed straight up to the ceiling, and the right foot is resting on top of the floorbound one. it's one of the more excruciating poses of the class. the sun was setting over the hudson, in the window to our left. as we held the pose and kept breathing through our noses, tania walked around and started telling us about a fancy wedding she attended over the weekend. the rabbi said to the couple, you may think this is the happiest day of your life, but today is not perfect. "i really liked that, that he acknowledged the full reality of that day." she acknowledged both the openness and difficulty of the pose, then had us switch onto the other side. now i could see the sun was setting behind a cloud, and there was enough contrast outside that you could make out rays of sunlight coming from behind the cloud. i remember sunlight like that when i was in middle school and walked down the hill behind my house to school in the mornings. and it also kinda reminded me of the bright blue bug light in our backyard that i could see from our upstairs bathroom.
