a young boy descends steps
into a throng of daylight
he is clutching a stalk of asparagus
with the tenacity of a sphincter
and taking little boy bites of it
as he dirties his feet
in mom's summer planting
he has never looked at the latticework
stilting his home over ground that is
oceanlike in its coolness and moisture
he peels away a door for himself
wriggling under everything that has held him
he has no idea what danger he is in
his mother, graceless in her zeal
spies boy with spider hanging over him
and earthworm crawling beneath him
his face framed in lattices
a crisscross topped apple pie, so to speak.
