as much as we cling to city life, lots of people in new york sure seem to need the parks and sidewalk cafes and gardens and outdoor places. pete, an old friend that i look up to, is enjoying watching me grow up in new york.
when we get by, we'll make it by, when we get by, with love
i look in your eyes, i look in your eyes
they're pretty as the skies above
everything, everything, everything is okay
we could make love in the shade, drink some chocolate lemonade
you're so fine, and the day is fine, and we'll be fine
when we make it by and we get by with love
- d'angelo, when we get by
i started listening to this song when i was 20. i was full of optimism even though i had convinced myself that i was angst-ridden and deep and unhappy. silly and normal, i guess. i listened to d'angelo as college turned warm and sunny in the spring, and again in the fall as i walked around in new york for the first time.
you understand, right: that to me it doesn't matter if a song is cheesy? what matters is how the voice sounds and what i think of when i hear it.
